Russ Mattison 1946 – 2010

Russ (Sugar Daddy) Mattison was born May 3, 1946 in Eugene, OR. He grew up in Springfield, OR and graduated from Springfield High School where he met his wife, Marlene, on a blind date. He served three years with distinction as a combat engineer and expert rifleman in the US Army during the Vietnam War. He proposed to Marlene in a letter with a ring while stationed in Germany. They were married July 29, 1967. He had a son, Rob, a daughter, Laurie, and a grandson, Connor. He worked most of his career in the Heating Ventilation Air Conditioning industry where he attained master journeyman status. He retired in 2006 after 33 years in the Plumbers and Pipefitters Union. He retired to pursue another passion, motorcycle riding. Russ and his son Rob were among the original members of The Boise Valley Riders when Preston founded the group in 2002. He can best be remembered as a good man with a contagious personality who made friends easily wherever he went. On our many motorcycle trips together he would always strike up a conversation with a stranger and come away with a new friend. On these trips he often spoke of the love of his life, Marlene, and after about three days into a trip he was ready to start heading back home to her. They were married 43 years. He would drop whatever he was doing and come to your aid if you needed help with anything. He helped me attach the sidecar to my bike when I bought it and was the first person to ride in it. After his memorial service he had his last ride in it to his final resting place at the Idaho Veterans Cemetery.
